Newly crowned “American Idol” winner Caleb Johnson will release his debut album this summer. The self-titled effort is scheduled to be available Aug. 12 via 19 Recordings/Interscope Records and will include first single “As Long As You Love Me,” a rock-and-roller written by Justin Hawkins of The Darkness.
As for what else will be on the album, the Asheville, NC native hinted to his hometown newspaper that he’s looking to break away from past Idols, whose debuts have relied heavily on contributing songwriters. “I want to do my own stuff,” Johnson, 22, told the Citizen-Times Thursday. “I want to write my own stuff.”
He added that he’s going to “buckle down” on recording the songs soon. “It’s going to be some bad-ass songs,” he predicted. “It’s going to be really soulful; it’s going to have a lot of depth to it. It’s going to be heavy, and that’s the record that’s going to come out.”
On Wednesday, Johnson topped 17-year-old pop singer Jena Irene to win season 13 of “Idol.” He and the other finalists embark on the 41-show“American Idol Live” tour starting June 24 through Aug. 23.
